Go to a junk yard and remove the part you need yourself
You can go to a junk yard and find a lot of the parts that you need. Some junk yards will have some parts for sale that they have already pulled off of some of the cars. However, these pre-pulled parts generally cost you a little more than if you go out on the lot, find what you need and remove it yourself.
There are a lot of parts that you can get from a junk yard without worrying about them not working. However, there are other parts you should avoid purchasing without having the ability to test them first. For example, hoses, brake pads, rotors, clamps and many other parts you can clearly see are fine. Things like carburetors and alternators you will be taking a chance with.
If the car looks like it was in an accident and the motor didn't take the brunt of it, then the chances are good these will also work. However, if the car appears to be in solid condition, then it more than likely made its way there because it had a lot of issues, so you may want to go to another source for these types of parts.

You can leave your phone number with mechanic shops around you and let them know the parts that you are looking for. Sometimes they may have someone come in who replaces a part that still runs fine, but they just want to be diligent. Or, sometimes the mechanic may be able to rebuild a part you need and sell it to you for a good price.

The one thing you do want to be cautions about is buying used parts online. It's better if you buy through a trusted source or through a website that protects buyers if there ends up being a problem with the items you have purchased.
